As another round of storms swept the McHenry County area late Thursday, road closures were reported and thousands of residents lost power.
Nearly 4,500 ComEd customers were without power in McHenry County as of 7:22 p.m. Thursday, according to the utility company website.
In McHenry, police encouraged drivers to avoid Front Street-Route 31 between John Street to Oak Avenue because of flooding, according to an alert sent out just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
A flash flood warning is in effect for McHenry County until 10 p.m. Thursday.
A tornado watch was issued for McHenry County and northern Illinois Thursday afternoon.
The National Weather Service issued the watch at 1:55 p.m. Thursday and it is set to expire at 9 p.m. Thursday.
Thursday’s severe weather comes as the area cleans up from Wednesday’s weather.
The National Weather Service received a report of 60 mph winds near Union and a tree down and a branch down in the road near the intersection of Indigo Drive and Russet Road in Algonquin during Wednesday’s storms.
Whether Wednesday’s storms produced a derecho has not yet been finalized. A derecho needs to be a solid line of storms, and the path length has to be long. Eric Lenning, a weather service meteorologist said it had to be at least 250 miles of destruction along the path.
While damage Wednesday was reported from Eastern Nebraska to Michigan, Lenning said he wasn’t sure yet if it was all the same system.
Flash floods were another potential risk with more heavy downpours. The weather service said heavy downpours may cause “widespread ponding” on roads and parking lots, and there could be isolated flooding of roads and urban areas.
The forecast prompted Woodstock officials to reschedule a showing of the Wizard of Oz scheduled for Thursday in Woodstock Square to Aug. 6. Wednesday’s weather also prompted the cancellation of a Woodstock City Band concert for Woodstock Square that evening.
Local pools also closed because of the weather.
Woodstock Water Works was closed for the day Thursday because of the weather. Sunburst Bay Aquatic Center in Cary closed early Thursday
Government meetings also canceled.
Island Lake rescheduled a Thursday evening Village Board meeting to June 18 because of the weather. Huntley officials canceled their June 11 meeting and will meet again June 25. Lake in the Hills officials rescheduled their village board meeting to June 16.
Metra warned customers to expect delays Thursday evenings because of the weather.
